2001: Historical AssociationsWe had a lot of fun with last year's PDG series on maximum likelihood and phylogeny estimation at Harvard. The PDG continues this year at Yale, exploring the theme of historical associations in phylogenetic biology. The historical association approach evaluates the phylogenetic congruence between various biologically and/or ecologically associated entities. For example, the concerted evolution of species and their genes, hosts and their parasites, and geographic areas and the organisms that inhabit them. Recent work in this area has emphasized the conceptual relationships and methodological similarities between seemingly disparate areas of research. We hope to have several monthly sessions during the Spring term here at Yale, each hosting invited speakers to address the merits and limitations of the historical association perspective as it applies to molecular evolution, coevolution and biogeography.
